You cannot taste food without saliva!

Scientific Facts

You cannot taste food without saliva!

We human beings have many organs but there are five important organs that connect us to the environment. They are – smelling, tasting, touching, seeing, hearing. Tongue is  the sensory  organs that aid us in tasting. With the help of our tongues, we can differentiate food from one to another.

For the food to get digested, saliva plays an important role. Then what is saliva? What are the components? These questions may arise. You can get the answers here.. So, saliva is the watery and somewhat frothy substance produced in the mouth. Produced in salivary glands. It is 98 percent water and it contains some enzymes and electrolytes. Seems interesting? It plays a vital role in making our food taste good because

  •  It keeps our mouth moist and comfortable.
  • Fights germs in our mouth and prevents bad breath
  • Helps to chew, taste and swallow

Imagine if you don’t have saliva… what would happen?

our mouths become dry. It leads to xerostomia(dry mouth). It causes gums and other tissues to become swollen. Seems so horrible! Assume you went to a restaurant and ordered your favourite things. If you don’t have saliva, it seems so terrible to you as you  cannot feel the taste.

Let us make an experiment to check the role of saliva.

You need

  •  A  paper towel
  •  Food to taste
  •  Drinking water for everyone

The experiment goes like this-

Take a paper towel and dry off your tongue. Taste each food one by one. Now, take a glass of water  and taste again. Your saliva does a miracle!

So you might understand the importance of saliva. An important fact about saliva is that we can produce enough saliva in a year to fill two bathtubs!

To conclude, saliva affects our health every moment of every day. Without saliva it is impossible as it plays an important role in feeling taste. In order for food to have taste the food must dissolve in saliva. In my words, if there is no saliva, there is no meaning to eating  food. This shows the mechanism of our body and how they make us a complete human.
